Self-reflective essay

The first thing I did as soon as I got the reading material was look up the essay by Wislawa Szymborska. I read it. I reread it. A week later I found a book with her poems in the library and that book has been with me ever since. I just want to thank you first for introducing me to her work because that book has saved me at times, inspired me when I was low, offered companionship when I thought I needed none.  I know all this might sound cheesy but it is what it is.

The first poem I wrote in this course was called ‘Pink Crush’. The last poem I wrote in this course was ‘Four dinosaurs lived in a nest’. As much as I hate confessing it to myself, all poems of mine have been about loss.  I do not like seeing a pattern in my work but I guess that is the point of this essay. I do not even like writing about loss or love for that matter. While writing each of these poems, not even once I realized that I was writing about loss. In fact, I took grave measures to not write about romantic idea of love or things that make me sad. But I guess in recognizing what I do not want to write on I wrote on those very themes.

I also had a habit of using alliteration and would use it as and when the thought came. Now I am more careful of this habit. I think about the form and what I want to say all the time. One of the feedback Akhil gave me for my poems is that if a meaning can be conveyed in small number of words then do that. I have recognized this thought process in so many of the novels and poems that I admire, and it opens new ideas for me every time I re read the work. This is another reason why the book of poems by Wislawa is still with me. I have also taken this feedback for my writing. I have also become conscious of the way enjambment works but my writing has been slow to incorporate this recognition. I think I can see a process here.

One of the most enriching, joyous process for writing a poem has been the process of writing a villanelle. I enjoyed the hard work that I put in it. I detested the process of writing a ghazal. I think I still need to work on it. I have tried working on it but it drains my energy to work on a ghazal. I am not giving up on it. But I do recognize that I do not like working on a ghazal. The most challenging part for me has been to write a ghazal. I am going to take the challenge forward and submit the ghazal to Akhil by mail in the holidays as I am under a lot of pressure right now. I found the response poems to be a very difficult and enriching process. I enjoyed it as well.

I liked working on the nonet too. It was one of the most helpful experience as I struggle a lot with replacement of words and lines. Basically, I find editing very hard. I can edit other’s pieces. But I can never edit mine. In fact, I keep everything and keep on adding more lines. While discussing prosody and nonet I could make a lot of connections with my own work. I could come up with more logical and analytical solutions as to why a particular word or line should be kept and why should they be removed.  The exercise of locating our experiences while drawing that map of Delhi helped me writing what I wanted to say through my city poetry and which place do I need to direct it to.

More than reading the poems on the reading list, I was excited about reading the poems of my fellow classmates. Reading their work has influenced mine. Everyone read differently into other’s works and it was quite incredible to see everyone handle each other’s work with kindness as well as sincerity. There have been times when I could not make sense as to why I wrote a particular line, or why it should go here and not there, but in times like this, someone has come with a better understanding of the line in my poem and I felt understood. Editing each other’s work was a fairly constructive process, but most importantly it was the poems that I would be looking forward to on Wednesday that made me want to come to every class. Believe it or not reading my classmates’ poem has made me see flaws in my poems. I might not be able to express it very well right now but I am aware that their poems have shaped up my critical abilities. It was again a very good experience to listen to them on the poetry reading day where they read out their own poems, some of which we had read. But the listening experience only added on to my experience. It was one very good day.

I See Kashmir from New Delhi at Midnight by Agha Shahid Ali is one of my favorite poems in the whole reading list.

However, I wish we could go outside more and work on our poems. I must say that one of the most memorable experience for me, my craft of poetry, my writing, my understanding has been the excursion to Old Delhi Railway Junction. I wish we had more such experiences where we could leave our immediate comfortable surroundings. I am so glad that I could be part of that experience. I really liked the poems that each one of us wrote that day. I just hope and wish we could have more of such classes in future.

I am reading this book called Read me at School. One of the poems that is on top of my head is this:

Poem about the injustice of Being Made to Stand Outside in the Rain at Break-time
                                                                                It’s
                                                                                Not
                                                                                Fair
-          Sue Hardy-Dawson

I guess the reason why its on top of my head is also because I relate to the feeling. Its not fair that the course ended so soon.

November goes NoAmber

November goes NoAmber on a lot of fireproof things
but tell him ‘H E     I S      O N    F I R E     B O Y’,
and buoyyy...
he will not even need a lifebuoy to wash the ire out of fire.
He will run to the corner of the road
and try to brush off the ashes when he has not even burnt yet.

November goes NoAmber on the curly wavy streets of Delhi and still there is no cutdown on the emissions. There is no fire extinguisher for this kind of warming up.
November goes NoAmber and a swarm of traffic lights flirt with him trying to get him to fit in spheres of their waiting.
If this waiting does not make me throw up,
November will definitely. Because he reacts back. He damn well reacts back
and that too with a lot of Amber.

November goes NoAmber on the delhi streets without batting an eyelid at the traffic signals,
calling out to all whooping traffic lights
and saying "give me December and I will give you winter".
I drag him past the traffic lights.
It is then that November goes NoAmber on me, says "there is no waiting for a month that already rests on the axis of a geography I had no hand in preceding".

November will never yellowy well manage alone.
November still got the cheek to tell me how left out he feels when the search party only comes for the warmth in winter. What about the chill. What if the blankets want to send a search party for the chill.
And in that moment, I figured, November makes sense only when it is not speaking NoAmber.

Obviously, I go NoAmber on November
and tell him he still got pretty chill for a color that does not let go sun’s hands.
And in that moment, I swear I saw November raysing ears,
laughing without letting go y from the year.
I don’t know why.
Don’t ask me where did the why go.
This whole year has been about going and not coming back. And if I had had a heart I would have definitely let it come back with a beat for the NoAmber in this November’s search party.

November still says that he aint looking for sunshine,
that he is looking for caution in traffic lights.
No November, you better not go NoAmber now.

Moving on

I have disliked geography so much that I was very happy to know that in hindi, geography was called bhugol. Since there was already gol in bhugol, I could easily circle the 0s in my answer sheets and call it 'literal manifestations of me being able to understand bhugol'.
After all I am still getting gol from bhugol.

I take words very literally sometimes.
It was only a year back I got to know that literally is also an adverb,
That adds emphasis while not really being true. For eg when you say ‘dude, I literally died laughing’, Clearly means, you, did not die laughing.

My problems with ‘geography’
-          started when I could not hold the globe in my hand
So I let it stay on the teacher’s table.
The world is too heavy for me anyway
so let me just wait
and not get grades below c-level.

It started with maps and word plays.
One of the first games I ever played was atlas.
I was the only one who could notice alas in atlas.
atlas gave me my first anagram- saalt- with a double a.

It started with mastering the art of dropping things.
In 5th std my team lost the cricket match
because I dropped a crucial catch.
In 2nd std I dropped a dot on comma
And I called it global comma for days
Until someone in class punctuated me
and said "that is a semicolon, shreyasi."

See I might have had a height of a badminton racket
But my self-confidence was the size of a basketball
....court
I still believe puncture is a word derived from punctuation marks.

My problems started with learning GMT
My time of birth is according to IST.
Which meant that I had to wait
for 5 and a half hours before their time zone could match my time of arrival.
I am early at most events.
I do have a problem waiting.

What I don’t have a problem is finding answers
I have given the most intelligent and stupidest answers to questions like
"Which is the pink city?"
:
:
"Jaipur"

"What were the first living beings like?"
:
:

"Lonely"

"What is the opposite of fresh and use it in a sentence?"
:
:
“when I had dinner in lunch time, I did not feel hungry.”

And just like now
Nobody understood the meaning of that line even then.
And just because I have been a master at dropping things,
Don’t expect me drop hints, every time somebody doesn’t pick up, why dinner in lunch time is opposite of fresh.
See, Stale was a word I did not know then
Or that salt is used as a preservative to preserve fresh food.
Or that our body was less salt and more saalt – with a doule a – which is to say
Our body is 40 teaspoons of salt
Which is to say that we are designed to preserve.

And now I am trying
to convert that gmt into a happy memory
so that my dementors do not preserve alas in this atlas.
So that I stop being salty to geography teachers, to all the people who made my decisions and then left me dealing with climatic fluctuations,
forgive them for all incorrect forecasts
All the directionless ways they told me - how my highway could not be built; how my compass was not magnetic enough to align itself; how my maps were not drawn to the scale; how my atlas was not flat enough-----

The world was never really flat anyway.

And may be that is why I have been carrying globes stuck to my earrings
If you ever notice, you will notice
Most earrings have globes hanging on to earlobes.
Why?
.
.
Because
People literally want us to carry the weight of the world.
And like my hands---------- even my ears can’t carry the weight of the world.

They reject everything that is not gold.
I am still the only one who will find gol in gold.

And I am still the only one who is on the last bench
concentrating hard on the globe
that world has set so out of my reach.
My teacher says we all are meant to move the world. I stand when my name is called for attendance. I go up to her and say "Done waiting------- Need a demo".

And with that I pushed the globe off the table.

I look up at her
and say
"see, I moved the world"

Response to Nitoo Das' The Poetry of Everyday Life

Everyday Life : I

Ceiling Fan

I am a switch away from action
On some days I cut through air
On some days I just hang around
On most days
I am watching.

Four dinosaurs lived in a nest

Four dinosaurs lived in a nest.

The building doesn’t get built
the way dreams do.

Some other day I had asked someone
“how do you spell relatable?”
And she had answered
“SAME”.

Today my brother recounted hysterically
“I dreamt I was debuting with Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra and she exclaimed whether I would not take selfie with Mausi”
We dinosaurs laughed our scales off.

The building builds on itself
The way dreams do.

Remarkable feathers were left in the nest
when the building was emptied.
Then the pigeons came in
they shall spot the scales.

“how do you spell nests?”
“Tags”

Dreams are forgotten
Not in the way building is.

Response to Nitoo Das poem- Directions

Parallels

On platform 16 a lady sat on a bench and waited
Her elbows hooked on to her two heavy handbags
Her crossed arms held herself
Her feet gripped the handle of her fat attachee.

To Not Let Go is an art we practice well sitting on platforms.

Trains did not arrive on this platform to load and unload passengers.
Most people looked like their luggage.
Most luggage looked like their people.

After half an hour a train crawled in
Speakers announced the arrival of ‘Mathura – Ghaziabad’
Someone going to Mumbai got on
With a matchstick sticking out from his mouth
and a phone on his ear
Who knows who is lying.

We Are Going To Get Somewhere might be the name of matchbox.

With a bag on my back, I tried on invisibility
But it’s a different magic trick
if you are just sitting and others are walking
you are going to get noticed.

Three women and two children on the edge of the floor of the train
sat facing the door
even though the train was empty
.
There has to be more freedom in doorways that windows can’t seem to give.

The curtains close

The curtains close
And the lizard gets
Its home back.
But Ruskin’s stories
Loses a friend.

If I do not remember the Mouse
Or the Conceited Python
Or the Lizard
Do I fail the stories or the story teller?
Do I fail the message or my education?
Do I blame my ear or my brain or my age or more real things?
Do I philosophize, as if I am not already?

The curtains were ever of the tailor
As they were of the crop once.
The magic trick disappeared
Disappearance was the trick. A character. A Lizard.

Water

In the months of summer
hotness is the sum total of all my puns intended.

Nature wakes up early
in all my dreams humans manage
to kindly say hello to all kins of sabotage.

Friends, non friends and aliens
Between January and another January
months sit in boat. Already. Life jackets on.
So that shipping is easy. Charges do not
apply if the order reads
‘we reckon climate change’.

Naturally we are not quick leaners
or we would have learnt saving
when the squirrel did not follow up
when the metro was not late
when the planet did not stop at petrol station.

I took the subscription as soon as
I cancelled plans to check on water.

Hawking maybe danced today

Today was a beautiful day.
The morning sky starred a cotton beach
Hawking maybe danced today.

Look at how naturally they say
The sky will know when it’s taking too much.
Today was a beautiful day.

In Delhi today, Bougainvillea bloom made its way
Somebody stepped on the untrained colour hanging from its branch
Hawking maybe danced today.

Guess, hope cannot pay!
The amount of colour this season will touch
Today was a beautiful day.

Reread Longbottom saying “people die everyday…”
And if this death is neither a death nor a march
Hawking maybe danced today.

In the evening, the sun went away
The clouds were not seen as such
Today was a beautiful day
Hawking maybe danced today.

March

Today the clock ran out of time
“they need to get running” says March

Today the cells ran out of chemical energy
This standing ovation surprises March

If there is a marathon I can give up
It will be this and every year’s march

Not so long ago the calendar had whispered
“tell them I am guarding” like a night watchman’s march

The clock had a kind of prosperity today
“being stuck is my reward” it chimes. March!

How to write a poem

Wait
Hear.
Begin.
Do not pluck in the skin
Do not hold the skin of thoughts to ransom
Win some
lose some.

Someday invite yourself along with entire yourself
to sunshine march party
Fetch them water
Ask them questions
Read them lots of food
Ask them lots of questions
When they are finished answering
Say thankyou for the stop they made in your house
in your house.

In your house
Everything looks like it needs a shift
And while this structuring may look like an earthquake wave
Poems were never meant to cause damage
That was just the poetic effect.

So how to do poems
Waiting
Hearing
Beginning
Writing
I do not know.

Examination halls

The carpenter comes to class to work on some tables
I remember all the unhinged chairs in the front rows,
pencils and scales in the middle rows,
chits that flew as airplanes in the last rows.
Between these rows, I have managed to complete some years.
The carpenter gets his saw and says that the desk needs to be cut.
Empty it of all things important.
How do I tell him that it is already empty;
it is the desk which is important.
He switches the machine on and I ask him one last question,
something which the world so readily asks me every time I plunge into action
- "are you sure?"

He laughs at this.
His grey eyes laugh a shade brown
and I cannot help but wonder if that is the color of my desk
or my insecurity.
He says "I have been doing this for 25 years now.
It’s nothing new.
A new batch of desks will be dispatched."
I look at him with all the wood I could muster.
Can you drill it up?
He says “drilling holes is not something I do often; that you learn in classrooms.
I only use my saw to make things right.”

This generation is just scribbling texts on paper
hoping that one day they will become textbooks.
I am Writing long answers
to make sure my future bio does not read failure.

This generation walks in examination halls with pens
made from a company called difference of opinion
yet the marking scheme reads your opinion does not matter
They swagger in the halls well prepared,
but if you see their shaking heads, rebellious specs and nervous hands,
you might be able to catch change.

And change is that kid, that desk, that invigilator, that lost bottle,
who you always forget.
Always.
I can tell you a lot of differences when I walk in and walk out of halls
and yet I cannot remember any difference.

I think change stays put in examinations halls,
sits there like a quiet child,
bends over the desk
to hear the noise inside the hollow wood.
And then it smiles.

We are all acting as if we all are in examination halls,
and a bell will ring
and someone will come to collect our papers
and we will have our worst fears come true.

That we leave questions unanswered- Or worse- blank papers.

February is for friends

Remember how we used to crack copied jokes
You won’t.
Cause you are busy with dse
Or perhaps busy understanding the argument for the debate
You are going to win in the next 60 mins
And I am proud of you
But I like setting reminders and this is one such copied joke reminder
“the ship that never sinks?
--
----
Friendship”
And you'd say #itsnotevenajoke
But you still go ahead and laugh your best original laugh
And your eyes shoot with all the stars
that my spectacles definitely reflect
Because how else will I know
that I am scoring friendships.

On days when basketball court rules were the only rules we did not flout
you taught me that one love isn’t just a song.
On days when I learnt the entire climate chapter
To make sure that you understand how the monsoon wind travelled up
I forgot that you already knew the directions.
On days when I was a casualty in disaster management
you were the helpline number.
There was no history of missed call between us.
I know for a fact people tend to answer landline quickly than cell phones
You should get a landline now
February is for friends who still remember landline.
And those who don't.

There was a boy
The boy who lives
I know the boy is still there
I only remember his nickname now
Nicknames don’t make for facebook searches
He was the only person who used to shout daddyyyy when he fell
instead of mummy
and on days when holi was all colours
and not water management
when 5 p.m. meant that every child had to be out
Preparing for the game – Gallery
Why?
Because it used to take 30 mins to color the ground in criss cross
And it was a hard task
to find people
who could make such criss cross
Who could see where the lines were going,
Whether the lines being drawn were straight.
Even with their backs
They could draw a perfect gallery.
On such days
On such grounds
February gave you artists.

February is for friends who got lost
While playing hide and seek.
And chose not to be found
February is for all friends.

A Britannia cake can carry a lot of stories for a whole trip
So much that on birthday
I gifted a friend Britannia cake.
Some memories do not have calories.
But they do make you happy fat.
Some friends will always forget your birthday
But they still wish you anyway
Some friends will always come for the cake in your birthday
But they mean all the sweetness in the world when they say Happy Birthday!
And that is not because of the cake.

Some friends are not lightbulbs
But they do make you forget the distinction between sunshine and just light.
And in those moments
these friends edit their own names to one name
their phone numbers change to one number
Which says call anyone
Feburary is for friends.

I know of people who when look up in sky
See all the flights they did not take
And still Everyday they fold a paper and make paperboats.
Recycled paper boats
Make for good friendships.
At least they aint shipping friendships.

February is for all friends.
We keep the f word   f lo a ting....
Friends.

Immune system

Today my immune system tried to kill me
I feel like the corridors of the RML hospital
Held firmly by a need to save everyone
But this illness does not know how to save
It only knows how to overcome the body.

The diseases do not need saving
They are ready to go out of hand
Even when I stand patiently in a line
Which says patients only.

I feel like the queue in RML hospital
Which remains static like my body
But my body is electricity even with this static energy
Converting every second of wait to sneeze to irritation to remedy to should have taken care of myself.

In a few moments people will crowd around the Krishna dispensary
Helpless, but giving away tons to save the one.

The dispensary sits at the back of the RML hospital
Does not jump when it sees sea of new faces
Drowning in the corridors of illness.
Every day it diagnoses itself with claustrophobia
And treats itself
Without knowing who pays the bills.

Crushing Pink

The color of the shirt sang
The boy gets reflected on the mic
Yellow light beam danced around
Will we ever get over the boys on the mic?

Pink was the loudest noise in the sky that night
And though the sky danced around the boy
Pink got the most thunderous applause
From an audience that did not know the first name of that love
Or how to call love back

Again.
